Mike Bost Buckles Under Pressure from Kelly Coalition

BELLEVILLE, IL — Lifelong politician Mike Bost must be feeling the pressure. It’s understandable: three polls in a row show the race in a dead heat, Brendan outraised him in the last quarter by a two to one margin, and fired up members of the Kelly Coalition are getting the vote out across Southern Illinois.

But Mike isn’t handling the pressure very gracefully. In an attack ad, Bost accuses Brendan of having “spent his career supporting” Mike Madigan and Nancy Pelosi — a claim Politifact labeled “head-scratching” and “pants-on-fire” false. Now, WSIL rates the same claim as “False,” saying “there is no evidence to support Bost’s claim that Kelly has spent his career supporting Nancy Pelosi and Mike Madigan.”

Mike Bost skips debates, won’t hold town halls, and resorts to lying on TV to save himself — and his big donors like Bruce Rauner. Together, all of Mike Bost’s falsehoods tell one single truth: only Brendan Kelly has the courage to save Southern Illinois.

WSIL: Truth Test: Ad claims Brendan Kelly has spent career “supporting” Madigan and Pelosi

WSIL — More attack ads in the tightly contested race for Illinois’ 12th congressional district.

This ad, from Republican incumbent Mike Bost, claims his Democratic challenger has spent his career “supporting” House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi and Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan.

“Folks, they’re at it again,” Bost says in the ad. “I’ve spent 20 years fighting Pelosi and Madigan, my opponent has spent his career supporting them.”

Both Pelosi and Madigan are deeply unpopular in southern Illinois, but there’s no evidence to support Bost’s claim that Kelly has supported them throughout his career.

Kelly is the St. Clair County State’s attorney, and has worked in county government since he left the United States Navy.

None of Kelly’s positions have ever given him a vote in either the Illinois Legislature with Madigan or in Congress with Pelosi and campaign finance records show he has also never donated money to either politician.

Kelly has also been clear throughout his campaign that he would not support Pelosi for Speaker if Democrats retake the House of Representatives.

He reiterated that point last month in an interview with News 3.

“I will not support Ms. Pelosi,” he said. “It’s not personal. it’s not something against her as a human being. We just need new leaders for this country.”

Bost’s campaign points to Democratic fundraisers featuring Pelosi that Kelly benefited from, but it’s important to note Pelosi herself  has never donated to his campaign.

Also, just because someone appears at the same event as someone else, doesn’t mean they support them.

Because there is no evidence to support Bost’s claim that Kelly has spent his career supporting Nancy Pelosi and Mike Madigan, we rate these claims as false.

Brendan Kelly is running for Congress in Illinois’s 12th Congressional District. The son of lifelong public servants, Brendan grew up in Southern Illinois. After serving in the Navy, he came home to raise his family. As the elected prosecutor of the largest county in the district, Brendan has fought corruption in both parties, prioritized prosecution of children’s sex assault, and successfully sued several of the nation’s biggest banks. He was the first prosecutor in Illinois to file suit against big pharmaceutical companies for their role in the opioid crisis. Brendan is endorsed by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Representative Cheri Bustos, AFL-CIO, United Steelworkers, and AFSCME, among others.
